Pop-up museums are all the rage in most big cities these days. Interactive Instagram centric museums centered around a theme, where you become part of the art when you take selfies and photos are popping up everywhere. In LA alone right now there must be at least 20-30. We checked out the latest hit, “I Like Scary Movies” with our good friend, Jenny Lorenzo (You may know Jenny from her youtube channel, Buzzfeed, Facebook, Cartoon Network, or Mitu where she has played a cast of characters including everyone’s favorite Cuban Abuela).
I Like Scary Movies is one of the largest of these pop-ups I’ve seen and they are using their space well with exhibits featuring Beetlejuice, The Lost Boys, IT, Nightmare on Elm Street, and The Shining. The rooms are large and extremely detailed. I have worked for Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights and the sets are great there but not nearly as detailed as some of these. They recommend 1 hour to an hour and a half to experience everything, however, per usual we took our sweet time and were there over 2 hours. This exhibit is sadly closing this week (perhaps it will pop-up again in another big city) and I’ve heard rumors they plan to return for Halloween?!
How much does an event like this cost? The price tag for this was $40 with lower cost tickets available on goldstar and groupon.
Did I enjoy it? I really did – I have to admit I’m not the biggest horror fan – however, the movies they chose had universal appeal – they were super iconic and Lost Boys and Beetlejuice were 2 of my childhood favorites so I was really excited to see those rooms. The event really focused a lot on The Shining and on Beetlejuice those 2 films got the most space. Another thing I loved about their location was that they had many bathrooms – so, you if you had brought multiple outfits you could infact change often. One thing I disliked was the heat – there was some air conditioning but not enough to really cool the place down and after an hour we were sweating profusely. I felt their website could have been better it does not include photos of any of the rooms or experiences and did not give any information about the suggested ages or if children could attend (as a mom of 2 young ones I would have totally brought them). Their social media was much better than their website for information so if you are interested in hearing more I would highly suggest you follow them.
If it does return with more franchises included I would happily go again as the execution was phenomenal.
